Everyone wants to be active and present in their life for as long as possible. We’re taught to do that by eating right and exercising, but sometimes it doesn’t feel like that’s enough. In reality, there is so much more to self-care than we think. Here are some ways to live a healthier and happier life:
Take time off
Overworking yourself leads to burnout, which can prevent you from functioning well and taking proper care of yourself. For example, when you don’t have the energy to cook, you end up eating junk food more often. Burnout also affects your ability to stay present and connected in your relationships with the people you love. Encourage a healthy lifestyle by taking a couple days off every now and again.
Connect with others
It’s in our human nature to need social interaction. While some alone time is good for your health, too much can definitely affect your happiness. Scheduling regular visits with your friends, family, or significant other should be a regular part of your weekly routine – even when following current social distancing recommendations. Additionally, you can hop on a video chat and spend some bonding time with loved ones, which can successfully fulfill your need for social interaction.
Get plenty of sleep
Our bodies need sleep in order to function. In addition to negatively affecting your physical health, not sleeping enough can hinder your ability to complete tasks throughout the day, leaving you feeling frustrated and unproductive. Set yourself up for happiness, health, and success by getting at least seven to eight hours of sleep every night.
Take care of your mental health
Self-care requires more than taking care of your body; it also requires that you take care of your mental health. Depression and anxiety can be major roadblocks to you living the life you want, so it’s important that you take time for yourself and seek out professional help if you find yourself struggling and stuck in a rut. Doing so might require a leap of faith, but there is absolutely no shame in admitting that you need support. Everyone does (in some form) eventually.
You deserve to live a truly happy and healthy life. In order to do so, you need to start out by believing that for yourself. Once you start investing in your health beyond the surface level, your quality of life will improve drastically and you’ll wonder why you hadn’t started earlier! Be present for yourself and the people you love. Enjoy your well-deserved joyful life!
